BACKGROUND
The modern day Sphynx was developed through a comprehensive breeding program from a natural mutation found in a kitten in Ontario Canada in 1966. Outcrossing from this natural mutation has established the distinctive Sphynx we know today with sound genetics, a vast gene pool and minimal health problems.
CHARACTERISTICS
The Sphynx is a sweet tempered loving individual that is easy to handle. It has a lively, often comical personality, and is extremely affectionate. They are very easy to train and will thrive with the extra mental stimulation of learning. Try to imagine a cat that is as obedient as the most well trained dog, as naughty as a little child can be, as agile as a monkey up a tree and as sweet as any furry kitty.
GENETICS
Due to the nature of the Sphynx gene (hrhr) it is possible for kittens to be born short coated or fuzzy. This may be due to the recessive nature of the gene or as a part of a past or present outcross program. As a part of all good Sphynx breeding programs it is essential to ensure that the breed has enough hybrid vigour to ensure good gastro-intestinal health as well as breed type. Coated and fuzzy sphynx are purebred cats with a random expression of the hrhr gene.
CARE REQUIREMENTS
The Sphynx does infact have a very fine suede like fur over its body. However, some Sphynx do have a sticky feel when this fur is very limited. Unlike all other cats the Sphynx does not cool itself by panting. Rather, it has sweat glands on its body similar to a human. Therefore with the production oil and sweat on the body and in the ears, the Sphynx will need bathing on a regular basis to ensure that they are free from dirt and bacteria that may build up causing irritation and/or infection. As part of the Sphynx routine they are taught to accept bathing, nail clipping and ear cleaning as a part of their usual lives. The Sphynx is not a maintanence free cat.
LIFESPAN, SIZE & WEIGHT
The Sphynx is a robust breed and can have a lifespan around 13 - 15 years with good health care and nutrition. As a medium sized cat the female will average around 4kg with the male around 7kg at maturity.
IDEAL OWNERS
The ideal home for a Sphynx is with an active sociable family who simply love cats. They must be able to be kept inside at all times and have access to a suitable outdoor play area where possible. As they can be a little mischevous the Sphynx may not be suitable for families with very young children. However with firm boundaries and plenty of activities and stimulation the Sphynx would suit any family.
